Neuschwanstein

Hey everyone,

Mike and I (mostly me), decided it would be an awesome idea to go to Neuschwanstein. I have been trying to make more “travel/interactive” videos…..which require me to actually leave the house and brave the outside world. We looked up the weather and saw it was actually going to be decent outside…So I thought to myself  it would be nice to finally start my Neuschwanstein video. Now there are so many things I have to say about Neuschwanstein and hopefully this blogpost won’t turn into a rant (please lord let it not be a rant).

I have been at least 5 times to Neuschwanstein….I live in Munich and have been living here for almost 3 years…..Why not go…It’s only an hour+ away?

It was extremely cold this time. This was seriously the coldest I have been in my life…Even with my down jacket, my beanie, my sweater, pullover and etc etc. I was still freezing my assoff…. I could seriously feel my soul turning into an even bigger ice cube than it already is (if you plan on going to Neuschwanstein from November-March/April DRESS WARM). I do have to say that the snow made it a little more magical though :p

There were too many damn people! Y’all! I am not over exaggerating but there were seriously SO MANY PEOPLE. Everywhere I turned……a selfie was being taken, people were talking too loud…People were touching things that weren’t supposed to be touched etc etc. It was just really crowded and sortuve made me feel like a sardine in a can.

Baustelle (construction). There seems to always be construction at this dang castle…If its not the bridge being closed, it’s the whole front of the castle being wrapped in plastic and metal. I mean the castle is still beautiful BUT the whole metal bars and ugly yellow signs just take away some of the beauty.

If you are in the Munich/Bayern area and you are thinking about going to Neuschwanstein….DON’T DO IT. I say this after going many different times and experiencing it during many different seasons. Neuschwanstein MAY be the “Disney” castle BUT it’s not worth the money in my opinion. The castle has too much of a “hype” around it and I seriously find it to be a tourist trap. I would recommend going to the little sister castle which is called Linderhof. SO MUCH MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! Plus…The tour isn’t as crap as the one at Neuschwanstein. :p

WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING AN AUPAIR

Follow up for the video I posted about being an aupair, I decided to make a blog post that is a little more organized in regards to this topic. Sorry it took so long, I have a chaotic unorganized life. I have dedicated so much of my time to being an aupair and I feel like I am a pro…Actually I fail miserably at it but I enjoy it.

Lets just jump right in.

An aupair is an exchange….You offer childcare and light household cleaning in exchange for a place to stay in some foreign country and a little money on the side. Is being an aupair glamorous? Not at all. If you are lucky…You could end up with a glamorous family and vacation with them in New York, Miami and London….Does that happen often? Nope. I was so lucky because I have been with a family that has taken me to places, I would never be able to visit or afford in my lifetime without them. Most of the time the families are “normal” MEANING not extremely rich but not really middle class or poor.

I get SOOOOOO many questions about my experience, how I have stayed so long, how much money I make ETC ETC. Now granted I can not answer every question BUT I can give a run down of every important point I feel is very necessary when thinking about becoming an aupair.

  • You live with the people you work for. You eat with the people you work for. You spend your time off around the people you work for…and the list goes on.
    • What I mean is that you could very easily GET TIRED of the people and you will most like have a little lack of privacy. Their home is your home and sharing is caring. If you are not a people person or do not enjoy spending time with people, I would not recommend being an aupair. There are days where you just want to walk around naked and that sometimes isn’t always possible.

  • You don’t get paid a lot of money. I think the going rate is 260/300$ euros/usd. Now when I first became an aupair, I really thought this was a lot of money BUT after 1 week in Munich I quickly learned I was a peasant and had to learn how to be frugal like a peasant….No seriously it’s not a lot of money…Especially if you have a weird obsession with Döner and currywurst (why am I such a fat ass?).

  • Your hours are a little mixed up. You will not have typical job hours of 9-5. I consider this a pro because I have a forever changing schedule and usually have a lot of time for myself but a lot of people see this as a con. Granted some families love having a continuous fluid schedule that never changes and if it does change they find a resolution that usually does not involve you. I find that working Monday 1 hour, Tuesday 0 hours, Wednesday 5, etc etc. and the next week a totally different schedule….quite exciting for a “monotonous” job.

  • It’s an awesome gap year. I always recommend being an aupair to people that are indecisive about going to school to start their degree or even finish their degree. Would I recommend you staying here over a year just to be an aupair and not do anything else? HECK NO. Either you stay and find a new job or you can stay with your family and start a second job or volunteer doing something.

  • Go to the immigration office with someone that speaks German or at least have basic knowledge of German. I promise with a little basic knowledge you will get a lot further.
    • Bring all documents and forms to immigration office
    • Get there early
    • Fill out everything COMPLETELY and legible (they won’t accept it if they can’t read it)
    • Bring cash, they usually do not accept card

  • It’s easy but hard at the same time. I mean you work with kids constantly and children can be very stressful and exhausting BUT you usually only work about 4-5 hours a day. I had so much time to do everything I wanted to do.

  • LEARN THE LANGUAGE. Seriously use this time to immerse yourself in the culture. You have no idea how good it looks to list: Basic – Intermediate X language knowledge.

  • Meet people. Do not lock yourself in your room all day and night. Please go out and make friends. If you are in a big city there are usually hundreds of other aupairs out there looking for friends.

  • Save your money and make extra money!
    • Babysitting
    • Side jobs
    • Teaching English- being a tutor (if you speak English)
    • Find a hobby that you can make money from

Cheap Train Tickets Through Bayern

Screen Shot 2017-07-13 at 8.53.52 PM

Hey you guys!

I have been traveling with the “trains” for quite some time here in Munich. You would think I know all the tricks… BUT, I still seem to surprise myself. Well I don’t surprise myself, the Deutsche Bahn seems to surprise me.

Basically, if you are coming to Munich/Bayern as a group (up to 5 people) anytime soon, and looking for a cheap way to travel I would recommend getting the Bayern-Ticket. Not only is it cheap, you can order it months beforehand and you can also get it at any DB ticket automat.

The ticket lets you travel throughout Bayern for the day for DIRT CHEAP. I mean….REALLY cheap. I bought the ticket once with 4 other girls and we took a trip to Salzburg (near Bavaria) and it cost 50 euros there and back for all 5 of us. Granted we could not take the ICE and had to take the regional trains BUT STILL 50euros for a round trip to another country is a great deal. There are so many places that are accessible with this ticket and so many places that you could visit. If you are thinking about traveling to Bavaria and wanting to visit many destinations/make multiple stops the Bayern ticket is one of your best bets. PLUS the views are amazing.

This table just shows the amount of people traveling (anzahl Reisende) and the difference between price and class (2. Klasse = Economy, 1. Klasse = First class, Nacht = evening train rides).

I hope you will have so much fun and wish you so much luck on your journey through Bavaria!!

Love, Hayley ❤

Traveling to Munich?

Hey You guys,

Ok so most of y’all know that  I live in Munich, Germany. BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD. A lot of people that watch my videos, read my blog or follow me in general are interested in A) German culture through an American’s eyes or B) Looking for tips before coming to Germany. This wonderful blog post is for you people that are coming to Munich in the near future.

Munich is full of fancy cars, beautiful people and most importantly BEER. Not only is there a lot of it but the beer actually taste good. I 100% recommend a trip to a biergarten if you are in Munich from the months of April/May-September :D. The buzzing atmosphere will make you feel so welcome.

I have found a map of I guess the “best” biergartens in Munich that are accessible by public transportation. There are many that are not accessible by public transportation BUT I can’t give y’all all the secrets, now can I?

Biergarten Munich

Have a wonderful day & I love you guys ❤

Being “Black” in Germany

Good evening everyone!

Being sick and stuck in bed the past week has given me a lot of time to think of things to say/do when I am feeling better BUT UNTIL THAT DAY COMES I WILL MAKE A BLOG POST. I made a wonderful video lightly skimming the surface about being a “Woman of Color” here in Germany. I get asked often what it is like here in regards to racism and in general just being brown.

As always I am here to speak (well type) about what my experiences have been and what my opinion on the matter is. If you are looking for a hate filled post you might as well go to another blog or something BECAUSE IT AIN’T HAPPENING HURRR.

I know that a lot of people still think of Germany as this racist nation full of Hitler loving blonde hair blue eyed soldiers BUT sorry to break it to you THAT’S NOT TRUE. Germany is one of the most diverse countries in the world (personal opinion). Germany is surrounded/bordered by so many different countries that it is inevitable that it would be a melting pot PLUS they have Berlin…Which is basically Multi-Culti capital.

I do understand there is tension due to the whole “refugee crisis”(ughhh) as some like to say, which leads me to point 1…. The “racism” that I see in Germany has nothing to do with African Americans but with Middle Eastern & African folks. I feel like Turkish, Syrian, Nigerian  etc. etc. people get the sh*t end of the stick here in Germany. I am not saying they are treated horribly but I do see and hear people say things that sound a little “iffy” or I have to ask myself “Is that really necessary to say or do to/about these people?”

In regards to being identified here, I have never once had to list my “race” … SKIN COLOR….as an identifier. I mean I got in a lot of trouble for not deciding between the two religions they offered BUT I am still here and standing. I have not had to list my race for getting an ID card or for voting or for ANYTHING. In the US I had to list my race on college applications, test, voters registration application or drivers license.

I get a few stares, I get a few “woher kommst du?” and I get a few people that think my hair is a sponge BUT that’s not too harmful and I feel like I can educate people when they seem to be a little perplexed. As most people know I have an obsession with Germany. I really love it here and I feel that Germany and the people here are not able to love their country or their culture. Germany is a bustling land of culture and history, which has come so far from it’s past and I believe the best way to get over this “racist/nazi” Germany mindset is to just MOVE ON PEOPLE. Seriously, we do not have to forget but we can very easily scoot scoot into the future.

I SHAVED MY HEAD

Actually no, I did not personally shave my head BUT my head is shaved….Parts of it. I know I know, I am too cool for school now (ha ha -_-). There is actually reasoning behind WHY I did this. I know people say “Hayley, you’re not cool…STOP TRYING”. Let me start off by saying I KNOW, this was the only way to get rid of my little wanderer. Some of yall may not know (if you watch my Youtube videos religiously you would know) BUT I burnt my hair on a candle years ago and the hairs never grew back afterwards! There was one little spot that would never grow back and would always stick up NO  MATTER WHAT.

I decided to take matters into my own hands…. shaving my hair off seemed like the best solution…DUH I mean seems very logical. Here are some SEXY SELFIES (Just kidding, I am so not sexy). I mean when I do my hair and makeup, it looks really bad ass so I am very satisfied ❤ 😉

BAYERN

Good Evening Friends ❤

This past Saturday I was riding all around a winter wonderland. I really love Munich, Bayern, Bavaria…ETC ETC. It is seriously one of the most majestic and beautiful places this world has to offer. I am not too happy with the lack of snow BUT hopefully that will come some time very soon! Aside from being in the car going 100+ on the country back roads, I was able to see such beautiful scenery! From Kochlsee to Tegernsee to Wallgau to Jachenau.

I plan to have a video uploaded sometime next year about riding/driving in Germany..We shall see how that goes! I hope yall have a wonderful weekend and Happy Early 4th Advent!

❤ Hayley
